Food Delivery Apps: The Boda Boda revolution
Aaaah, Kampala! The city of Wolokoso and endless traffic. But let me tell you, bambi, things have changed! Remember the days when getting food meant either cooking yourself (sheer madness!) or sending your boda boda guy to wait paka-last at your favourite restaurant? Those days are slowly fading away thanks to Glovo and Uber Eats!

These apps came in like a hurricane, banange! Glovo launched in Uganda back in 2020, and Uber Eats, well, they’ve been battling it out for our hungry bellies. They promised convenience, speed, and a whole lotta options, all delivered by our trusty boda bodas. So, has it been a smooth ride? Not exactly, kyokka.
The Good Stuff (Ebirungi Bingi!)
- Speed Demons (Sometimes): Let’s be honest, sometimes these guys are FAST. Like, suspiciously fast. You order your Rolex and boom! It’s at your door before you can even find the TV remote.
- Variety is the Spice of Life: From matooke and kikalagala to KFC and pizza, these apps have everything. Craving Chinese at 2 AM? No problem!
- Boda Bodas are Earning: Let’s not forget the boda boda riders themselves. This app revolution has given employment to so many young Ugandans.
The Mazongoto (The Mess!)
- Missing Fries Mystery: Where do the fries go? This is the question that haunts every Ugandan who has ever ordered online. Seriously, you order a large chips and half of them vanish during the delivery. Is it the riders? Are the restaurants skimming? It’s a national wolokoso!
- The “Slightly Longer Route”: You watch your rider on the map taking a detour through Kireka when you live in Ntinda. What’s that about? Are they multi-tasking? Picking up another order? Akiika!
- The Price Wahala: Those delivery fees can sting, jaber! Plus, sometimes the prices on the app are higher than if you just walked into the restaurant yourself. Kichupuli? Maybe. Convenient? Yes.
- Internet Shutdown Blues: Let’s not forget the recent internet shutdown. Ordering from Glovo became impossible. Mr. Paul Musinguzi, a Glovo boda rider, was left without any income.
Reliability: Siiba Bulungi or Sula Bulungi?
Honestly, it’s a mixed bag. Some days, Glovo or Uber Eats are lifesavers. Other days, you’re left wondering if you should have just walked to the kafunda yourself. The apps themselves can be buggy. Estimated delivery times are often “optimistic,” and tracking your rider can feel like watching a snail race. And don’t even get me started on customer service… Bambi! It can take ages to get a response, and sometimes they just offer you a measly discount code for your next order.
The Verdict
So, are food delivery apps worth it? It depends. If you’re busy, lazy (no shame in that!), and willing to risk a few missing fries, then go for it. But be warned, it’s not always a perfect system. Sometimes the old ways are still the best. Calling your trusted boda guy might just save you some stress (and ensure all your fries arrive!). Just make sure you have some airtime beerakko!
