About
The Tabs Ug, also known as The Tabs, is a Ugandan instrumental music group featuring Allan Watson Waswa on violin, David Tayebwa on acoustic guitar, and Meris Nakigudde on keyboard. Two members are self-taught musicians.
The group originated as a duo in 2016, with Allan and David performing popular TV and film soundtracks, and pop covers. They later began composing original music and expanded their lineup. Allan and David first collaborated at the Milege Acoustic Project, performing at various venues.
The Tabs Ug officially formed, inspired by Allan's family name and David's stage name. Their debut performance was as guest performers at Sheraton Kampala Hotel. They went on to play at numerous private and public events, including the Commonwealth Youth Meeting and Makerere University's music department showcase.
Their rearranged version of the Game of Thrones theme garnered special recognition at the Pearl Rhythm Stage Coach. The Tabs Ug also showcased their work at the Milege Acoustic Project, National Theatre jam nights, and the Doa Doa festival. They collaborated closely with their mentors, the Milege band, performing with them at Stonefest.
The group has shared stages with local and international artists at the Milege World Music Festival and performed at the Nambi Clothing and Textile launch party. They also played regularly at Ethnic Club before its management change. The Tabs Ug has collaborated with actress Nana Kagga on her TV series, Reflections, and other private events.
Their original music blends Ugandan sounds with classical, pop, and folk influences. Allan, a self-taught violinist, was inspired by a song featuring the instrument. David, a guitarist and music business student, has a background playing in various bands and pursuing solo projects. Meris, a self-taught keyboardist and pharmacist, joined the group later and also plays in church.
