About

Paul Kafeero, also known as Prince Paul Job Kafeero and the Golden Boy of Africa, was the most celebrated composer and singer in the Ugandan Kadongo Kamu tradition. His illustrious music career produced 83 songs across 21 albums. He rocketed to fame with his 1994 hit "Walumbe Zaaya," a fifteen-minute lament on death with no repeated words, earning him the enduring nickname "Golden Boy of Africa" after winning a gold medal at the Cairo music festival. In 2003, his satirical song "Dipo Naziggala" about Ugandan drinking habits won a Pearl of Africa Music Award for best Kadongo Kamu single, and he also won the award for best Kadongo Kamu artist/group in both 2003 and 2004.

Kafeero's music was deeply rooted in the traditions of the Buganda Kingdom, with lyrics masterfully crafted in Luganda that addressed social issues with wit and insight. He was unique among Kadongo Kamu musicians for composing, singing, playing guitar, and dramatizing his music on stage. His melodic voice, charming stage presence, and vivid costumes, combined with his meaningful narrative songs, endeared him to Ugandans. His song "Olulimi Lwange," celebrating the embrace of culture, remains beloved throughout Buganda and Uganda. The outpouring of grief following his death confirmed his profound impact on the nation.
