About

Mafia 1, born Hassan Katende, hails from Luwero and was raised in Makindye, Kampala. He is the grandson of the renowned Ugandan businessman, Musa Body.

For a decade, Mafia 1 has been a prominent figure in South Africa, successfully balancing his business ventures with a thriving music career. His popularity extends beyond the Ugandan diaspora in South Africa, captivating the wider Johannesburg community. He has shared stages and connected with notable artists including Dar Les, Chameleone, Bobi Wine, Bushoke, Gudlyf (Radio & Weasel), and Bebe Cool, among many others.

Mafia 1 has graced numerous high-profile performances at venues like Mount Casino, Coca Cola Dome, Sun City, and in Cape Town and Durban. His extensive travels have taken him across Southern Africa and beyond, including Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Music has always been at the core of Mafia 1's life, leading to the creation of impactful tracks such as "Mandela Freedom," "Baligeya Nkona," and "Tebaagaliza" featuring Shiddy Style.

The moniker "Mafia 1" was bestowed upon him by an Italian man after Mafia 1, a concerned citizen, single-handedly apprehended the head of a notorious thug gang in Soweto, Johannesburg, and handed him over to the authorities. This act of bravery, even after surviving a harrowing gunpoint encounter with robbers, earned him the enduring nickname "Mafia 1 Tornado" among South Africans.
