About
Jamal, the voice behind the hit "Obawuwo," found his music resonating with Ugandan fans only after seeking appreciation abroad. Driven by circumstance, the youngest of five, raised by a single mother, Jamal left Kampala to pursue his musical aspirations. He found his initial opportunity in Kigali, Rwanda, performing karaoke at Nyiira Rock bar. This move, though difficult, was a step towards a sustainable musical career.
Despite winning a local karaoke competition, Jamal's recognition in Kampala remained limited, prompting his departure to Kigali. It was there, in Kigali's well-equipped studios with skilled producers and live musicians, that much of "Obawuwo" was recorded, resulting in exceptional and distinctive sounds.
Upon his return to Kampala, Jamal collaborated with Ugandan producer David Mwesigwa of DV Records. Mwesigwa's guidance and dedication were instrumental in crafting songs like "Abakyala Bazira." Jamal values Mwesigwa's approach, noting that he prioritizes the artist's vision and offers insightful advice for improvement.
Jamal's songwriting process is unique; he crafts his lyrics primarily in his head, solidifying melodies and choruses through practice before committing them to paper just before entering the studio. This method, he believes, allows for a more organic and memorable creation.
Currently, Jamal's music, including "Obawuwo," "Anavawa," and "Abakyala Bazira," is gaining significant radio play, with more tracks like "Panadol" and "Akagambo" set for release. Jamal stands out as a Ugandan artist possessing genuine vocal talent, a rarity in today's music scene.
